Abandonware DOS title

Civilization

Civilization is the critically acclaimed strategy game designed by Sid Meier and Bruce Campbell Shelley that became a staple in 4X turn-based strategy. Civilization was developed by MicroProse Software and released in 1991 for DOS, Windows 3.x, Amiga, Atari ST, Mac, etc. Civilization was followed by sequels, the last one being published recently. The goal of the game and the main gameplay features never changed; the fan-base is still strong to this day.

Civilization reviews

Abandonware DOS: "I clearly remember the first time I played Civilization. It was, perhaps, the first time I played a 4X game (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate). It took me a fair amount of time to learn the mechanics, understand the pace of the game, the gameplay and to finally beat the computer AI. Civilization marked the birth of a new genre that spawned sequels, blatant copies, and lots of other 4X strategy games and I think I can talk for every turn-based strategy fan out there when I say: thank god for that."

Dragon (1992): "Civilization is one of the highest dollar-to-play-ratio entertainments we've enjoyed. The scope is enormous, the strategies border on being limitless, the excitement is genuinely high, and the experience is worth every dime of the game's purchase price. This is an absolute must purchase for any PC/MS-DOS gamer. We again hope it will be translated to other systems such as the Macintosh and Amiga. Congratulations, Microprose and Sid Meier, for another truly outstanding simulation!"

Collector's corner:

The original manual included the famous tech tree on paper called "Civilization Advances Chart".

There have been several sequels to Civilization, including Civilization II (1996), Civilization III (2001), Civilization IV (2005), Civilization Revolution (2008), Civilization V (2010), and Civilization VI in 2016. In 1994, Meier produced a similar game titled Colonization.

Greatest game ever. A timeless staple gem only surpassed by Civilization 2, which is basically Civilization 1 Enhanced. Still playing it in 2022.
