Retro company spotlight: Strategic Simulations Inc.

SSI (Strategic Simulations Inc.) was one of the most prolific game companies of the 80s and the 90s. SSI was founded in 1979 and developed and/or published more than one hundred games. SSI was popular among video games players for two things: wargames and RPG goldbox games.

Strategy games developed by SSI include both wargames games base on real historical battles such as Battle of Antietam, Conflict: Korea, the "General" series (Panzer General, Pacific General, etc.), and fantasy games like Fantasy General or Sword of Aragon.

SSI was also well known for its RPGs. The GoldBox series holds a special place in the hearts of many RPG gamers. Games like Gateway to the Savage Frontier, Death Knights of Krynn, Buck Rogers: Matrix Cubed were part of the history of RPG gaming. Also, let's not forget other RPGs worth mentioning: the Dark Sun series, the Ravenloft series, Demon's Winter.

SSI ceased to exist when it was acquired by Mindscape in 1994. In 2013, the founder of SSI Joel Billings made the source code of many old SSI games available for preservation.
