The Elder Scrolls: Arena is where Bethesda's enormous fantasy RPG series began, and even in its early form it already aimed for an impressively large world. Players create a character, explore cities and wilderness, enter dangerous dungeons, complete quests, collect equipment, and gradually become involved in a much larger conflict. The game's scale is one of its defining features, offering an enormous amount of freedom for something running on early DOS hardware. The interface and combat can feel rather primitive now, and navigating the world may occasionally test your patience, but the sense of adventure is genuine. Arena has that classic computer RPG quality where every unfamiliar doorway might lead to treasure, a monster, or several hours of confusion. It is rough around the edges, certainly, yet it established many ideas that would later become central to the Elder Scrolls identity.
