The Dark Heart of Uukrul is a challenging fantasy role-playing game that throws the player into a sprawling dungeon full of monsters, traps, secrets, and enough dark corridors to make you seriously consider bringing a torch salesman along. Exploration is presented from a first-person perspective, while combat, character development, magic, and inventory management provide the meat of the adventure. The game expects players to pay attention and learn from their mistakes rather than simply charging forward with a sword raised. Its world feels mysterious and occasionally hostile, which suits the title perfectly. The interface can take some getting used to, but once its systems click into place, there is considerable satisfaction in gradually mastering the dungeon. This is old-school RPG design in the best sense: demanding, atmospheric, and unapologetically willing to let you discover that the thing you just touched was a terrible idea.
