Rise of the Triad: Dark War is a 1994 first-person shooter famous for its fast action, outrageous weapons, and gleefully excessive violence. Built on an enhanced version of the Wolfenstein 3D engine, it expands the classic shooter formula with vertical environments, jump pads, traps, explosive weapons, and enemies who are often more entertaining than intimidating. Players can use a range of unconventional attacks, including weapons capable of producing wonderfully ridiculous results. The game does not aim for realism; it aims for fun, spectacle, and the occasional opportunity to launch an enemy into the air. Rise of the Triad feels like the developers were given a simple instruction to make a shooter and responded by adding every silly idea they could think of. Fortunately, they were onto something.
