Midwinter

Midwinter creates a remarkable open-world survival adventure set across a vast frozen island, combining exploration, combat, strategy, and resource management. Players must recruit allies, travel across dangerous terrain, and resist an invading force while dealing with the harsh realities of winter. The enormous landscape encourages freedom of approach, allowing different strategies to succeed. Skiing, driving, climbing, and fighting all become useful parts of the campaign. It is an unusually ambitious game that makes snow look beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Winter holidays suddenly seem much less relaxing when the enemy is invading.

Midwinter reviews

Zero Magazine (1989): "Overall though, apart from all the little niggles and the disk accessing that goes on between (yes, there are some fair old pauses), there's something absolutely brilliant about this simulation. Do you want to know what it is? It's depth. Somehow the game seems immense, and it stands alone on the point. It's quite hard to get into, and takes a while to grip you totally. But once it has, it doesn't let go."

Computer and Videogames issue 100 (1990) - "Midwinter is astonishing! it's Just so vast, yet the gameplay is so intricate that it will take months of play to get through it. So comprehensive is the command system that the player's course of action is hardly ever restricted and consequently there are dozens of winning strategies. The urgency created by the time factor, the travel sequences with their amazing frosty 3D graphics and the "realness" of the characters provide a feeling of being there only to my mind matched by the likes of Elite and Dungeon Master, and like those two games, this one is undoubtedly set to be a classic"
