Chris Sawyer's Locomotion is a transport-management simulation built around the wonderfully addictive business of moving people and cargo from one place to another. Trains are the stars, but buses, trucks, ships, and aircraft also have roles to play as you build routes, expand infrastructure, and try to turn an awkward collection of towns into a functioning transport network. The satisfaction comes from watching a carefully planned system begin to work, followed inevitably by the moment when one overloaded station brings half the network to its knees. The game rewards long-term planning, efficient routes, and a willingness to keep improving what you have already built. Its accessible presentation hides considerable depth, making it easy to start and surprisingly difficult to stop. It is transport management at its most cheerful and quietly obsessive.
