Creatures 2 takes the strange virtual-pet experiment of its predecessor and makes it considerably more ambitious. The Norns return, complete with their ability to learn, reproduce, misbehave, and occasionally make you wonder why you ever thought raising artificial life was a relaxing hobby. The game expands the world, improves the creatures, and provides more tools for teaching and interacting with them. Rather than following a fixed storyline, you are encouraged to experiment and see how your creatures respond to different environments and experiences. That makes every installation feel slightly different, because your virtual population develops its own little history. It can be charming, frustrating, funny, and occasionally surprisingly absorbing. Creatures 2 is at its best when you stop trying to control everything and simply observe the digital chaos you have created.
