Decisive Battles of the American Civil War: Vol. 1

Released in 1988, Decisive Battles of the American Civil War: Vol. 1 is as straightforward as its title. You get historical accuracy, a serious strategy engine, and about as many graphical flourishes as a tax form. Yet the depth is impressive. It’s the kind of game where you don’t “play” so much as “study and then attempt to play.” Victory requires patience, careful planning, and a willingness to squint at small units on a monochrome map. For history buffs, it’s a goldmine. For everyone else, it’s a very dry history lesson disguised as entertainment.
