FoxBASE 2

FoxBASE 2 is a database development system from the early years of DOS computing, part of the family of tools that helped transform personal computers into practical information-management machines. It allowed users to create and manipulate databases, work with records, and build applications around structured information without starting entirely from scratch. The software was aimed at users who needed something more serious than a simple list but could not justify the machinery and expense of a larger corporate database system. Its text-based interface is unmistakably from the period, demanding attention to commands and data structures rather than hiding everything behind colourful buttons. That may sound unfriendly now, but it gave experienced users considerable control. FoxBASE is also interesting historically because it belongs to the competitive database ecosystem that grew around dBase-compatible technology. In an era when a hard drive might be smaller than a modern email attachment, having a capable database system on a PC was genuinely impressive.
