IBM Fixed Disk Organizer

IBM Fixed Disk Organizer is exactly the sort of utilitarian software that reveals how seriously early PC users had to take their storage. Released in 1983, it was designed to help users manage and organize information on fixed disks, at a time when having a hard drive at all could feel like owning a small piece of technological luxury. Compared with modern file managers, the experience is necessarily basic, but that simplicity is historically revealing. There are no glossy icons, search bars that understand natural language, or helpful suggestions about files you opened three months ago. Instead, the emphasis is on practical organization and keeping track of what is actually sitting on the disk. It is software with a job to do and little interest in showing off. For anyone fascinated by the early IBM PC ecosystem, it offers a glimpse of the mundane but important problems that accompanied the arrival of serious personal storage.
