Stellar 7 takes the tank-combat formula and launches it into science fiction, giving you a futuristic armored vehicle and a whole galaxy of unpleasant things to shoot. Inspired by Battlezone, the game combines first-person exploration with arcade-style combat, sending you across polygonal landscapes filled with enemy vehicles and other mechanical nuisances. Your tank is powerful, but it is certainly not invincible, so movement and positioning matter almost as much as trigger-happy enthusiasm. The 1990 version feels like an ambitious attempt to make an arcade tank game into something more immersive, and the result has a distinctive retro-futuristic atmosphere. Stellar 7 is especially entertaining when you simply want to drive around, find something hostile and politely introduce it to your main weapon. The graphics are dated, naturally, but the mixture of exploration, combat and science-fiction scenery remains surprisingly appealing.
