Warhammer 40000: Chaos Gate brings the grim darkness of the far future into a turn-based tactical battlefield where subtle diplomacy has been replaced by heavily armed Space Marines. Players command squads of warriors through missions against Chaos forces, carefully positioning units, choosing weapons, and managing the limited resources available to the squad. Combat rewards planning rather than reckless charging, although the temptation to simply point a massive weapon at something and pull the trigger is understandable. The campaign adds progression and strategic decisions between missions, giving the battles a larger sense of purpose. Its atmosphere draws heavily on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, with suitably bleak environments and an almost cheerful enthusiasm for enormous guns. The interface takes some learning, but once the systems click, the game becomes a satisfying tactical challenge. It is Warhammer strategy at its most appropriately grim: victory is possible, but nobody promised it would be pleasant.
