River Raid remake is a 1995 DOS reinterpretation of the classic vertically scrolling shooter, bringing the familiar thrill of flying low over rivers, forests, bridges, and enemy installations to a new generation of computers. The basic idea remains wonderfully uncomplicated: pilot your aircraft, destroy anything hostile, collect fuel, and try not to crash into the scenery. The remake preserves the addictive rhythm of the original while giving the presentation a more contemporary feel for its time. Fuel management adds a welcome touch of tension, because surviving enemy fire is not enough if the aircraft runs dry. River Raid remake is old-school arcade gaming at its most direct: fast, simple, occasionally unforgiving, and extremely easy to understand. Just remember that the river is not actually there to help you navigate.
