Shufflepuck Café is a 1989 DOS and Macintosh arcade game that takes air hockey into a wonderfully eccentric science-fiction setting. Instead of playing against ordinary humans in a sports hall, players compete against a collection of unusual opponents inside a futuristic café. The objective is simple: knock the puck past your opponent while defending your own goal. What makes the game memorable is the personality of its opponents, each with different playing styles and levels of difficulty. The matches begin casually enough, but later opponents can turn a friendly game into a desperate battle for survival. The controls are straightforward and responsive, making it easy to understand but surprisingly difficult to master. Shufflepuck Café has aged particularly well because it does not overcomplicate its central idea. Sometimes you really do not need an epic storyline. You need a paddle, a puck, and someone who is about to make you regret challenging them.
