Play The Bard's Tale online

The Bard's Tale is one of the great early computer RPGs, taking players into a dangerous fantasy world where creating a party is only the beginning of the trouble. Released in 1987, it features dungeon exploration, turn-based combat, character development, spells, equipment, and plenty of monsters waiting in dark corridors. The game encourages careful party management because even experienced adventurers can become surprisingly fragile when surrounded by things with sharp teeth. Exploration is largely first-person and maze-based, creating that classic old-school feeling of carefully mapping every corridor while hoping you do not accidentally walk into something unpleasant. The Bard's Tale has a strong sense of progression, with characters becoming more capable as the adventure grows in scale. It can be demanding, occasionally cryptic, and thoroughly old-fashioned, but that is part of its appeal. Before modern RPGs gave heroes elaborate backstories, they mostly gave them swords and told them to survive.
