Time Bandit is a sprawling arcade adventure that throws the player into a collection of strange worlds filled with enemies, treasures and secret passages. Its maze-like environments encourage exploration, while different areas introduce their own hazards and challenges. The game has a wonderfully eccentric personality, mixing fantasy, science fiction and surreal imagery without worrying too much about whether the ingredients belong together. Combat is important, but curiosity is equally valuable because many locations hide useful objects or alternative routes. The graphics are firmly rooted in the technology of the late 1980s, yet the imaginative design gives the game more character than its pixels might suggest. Time Bandit is the sort of adventure where you never quite know what the next screen will contain. It feels like wandering through somebody's wonderfully overactive imagination, armed with a weapon and absolutely no reliable map.
