Space Invaders is a 1995 DOS release of the arcade classic in which humanity's entire defense strategy consists of moving a small laser cannon sideways and shooting descending aliens. Despite the extremely simple premise, the formula remains remarkably effective. Enemy formations gradually move faster as their numbers decrease, creating a constant increase in pressure as the player attempts to clear the screen. Protective barriers offer temporary safety, although they inevitably become less protective after repeated enemy fire. Space Invaders helped establish many conventions of arcade gaming: escalating difficulty, simple controls, high-score competition, and the irresistible temptation to say “one more game” after losing. The DOS version provides a way to experience this foundational piece of gaming history on a home computer. There is no complicated story to remember and no inventory to organize. Just aliens, lasers, shields, and the increasingly urgent realization that they are getting closer.
