World Karate Championship offers a straightforward computer interpretation of competitive karate, complete with opponents who are considerably less interested in your personal wellbeing than your friends probably are. Matches are built around timing, positioning and choosing the right attack rather than simply hammering every key on the keyboard. The action is fairly simple by modern standards, but that simplicity gives the game an appealing immediacy. You quickly learn that throwing the wrong move at the wrong moment is an excellent way to spend the match being punched repeatedly. The presentation has the unmistakable character of an early home-computer sports game, yet the competitive element remains enjoyable. It is a compact, old-fashioned martial-arts experience where mastering a few moves matters more than memorising a massive combo list.
