Stronghold

Stronghold is a medieval strategy game that puts you in charge of castles, armies, and enough political trouble to make a peaceful life in the countryside seem terribly overrated. The game mixes strategic planning with resource management, asking you to think about troops, defenses, territory, and the practical business of keeping your stronghold alive. Battles are important, but preparation is often the real challenge. A poorly managed castle can become a very expensive pile of stones surprisingly quickly. The interface and presentation are unmistakably early-1990s, yet there is plenty of satisfaction in watching a carefully planned defense work exactly as intended. It is less about flashy action and more about patience, positioning, and making sensible decisions before the enemy arrives. In other words, medieval warfare with spreadsheets hiding just behind the drawbridge.
