Sherlock Holmes: The Vatican Cameos

Sherlock Holmes: The Vatican Cameos is a 1986 DOS adventure built around a Sherlock Holmes mystery and the detective's trademark combination of observation, deduction, and careful investigation. Players follow clues, examine locations, interact with characters, and attempt to uncover the truth behind a complicated case. As an early computer adaptation of detective fiction, the game relies much more on reasoning and textual information than on flashy presentation. Its Vatican setting adds a sense of historical intrigue and gives the investigation an appropriately grand backdrop. The pace is deliberate, rewarding players who take notes and remember what characters have said. It is not the sort of game where you can simply sprint into the next room and shoot the suspect, which is probably just as well for Holmes. Instead, you must think like a detective, which means noticing the tiny details everyone else has ignored.
