Wolfenstein 3D

Wolfenstein 3D is one of the landmark first-person shooters, placing players behind the eyes of an Allied soldier fighting through Nazi strongholds packed with guards, dogs, secret rooms, and an alarming number of bullets. The objective is refreshingly uncomplicated: explore the maze-like levels, find keys and secrets, collect weapons, and eliminate anyone standing between you and the exit. The fast movement and immediate gunplay helped establish a formula that would dominate PC gaming for years. Despite its age, the level design remains effective, particularly when you discover a hidden room containing ammunition or treasure. The DOS graphics are primitive today, but at the time the sensation of moving through a three-dimensional environment was extraordinary. Wolfenstein 3D helped define the modern FPS and remains a fascinating piece of gaming history, even if its preferred solution to most problems is still “open door, shoot everything.”
