R-Type

R-Type is a 1989 shoot 'em up that brings the relentless arcade action of the famous space shooter to DOS. Players pilot a small spacecraft through hostile environments packed with enemy formations, mechanical monstrosities, and enough projectiles to make a sensible person turn around immediately. The distinctive Force pod can be attached to the ship or launched independently, giving players an extra weapon and a useful defensive tool. Power-ups gradually turn the modest spacecraft into a much more dangerous machine, although surviving long enough to enjoy that firepower is another matter. R-Type is brutally demanding, but its tight controls and memorable enemy designs make every successful section feel earned. It is the sort of game where learning from your mistakes is essential, mainly because you will be making plenty of them.

R-Type reviews

Amiga Format (1989): "It'll take hours of play learning all the strategic moves essential for surviving the different problem areas, which is why the game is so damned addictive. You will need the old matchsticks to keep your eyes open through the too-short hours of night if you're going to get anywhere near level eight."

The Games Machine (1989): "Arcade addicts may find the squat screen does marginally limit manoeuvring space, but the game's all the more challenging as a result of it. If fault can be found (and you'd be hard to pushed) then maybe the sound could have been better; as the tunes stand they are good but they don't push the Amiga. This is a superior and very slick blast-'em-up."

Retro gamer collector's corner:

Irem has developed a number of sequels and related games, including R-Type II and Armed Police Unit Gallop. Their XMultiply, although not part of the series, has similar themes and gameplay, and was released around the same time as R-Type II. However, before any of these games was Katakis, a 1987 clone produced by Factor 5 for the Commodore 64 and the Amiga.
