Arx Fatalis is basically what happens when someone takes “dungeons and dragons” way too literally. You start trapped in a gloomy underground world because—oops—the sun burned out, and apparently nobody thought to invent lightbulbs. Instead of a sunny stroll, you get to wander dark caverns, talk to suspicious goblins, and make bread by throwing flour and water on the floor (yes, really). Magic is done by literally drawing runes with your mouse, which makes you feel like an underpaid wizard with carpal tunnel. It’s clunky, atmospheric, and occasionally ridiculous—but that’s the charm: a cult classic in dimly lit chaos.
