Beyond Good and Evil is a stylish action-adventure built around exploration, photography, investigation and a conspiracy threatening the world of Hillys. Players control Jade, a reporter who becomes increasingly involved in uncovering the truth behind mysterious events and an oppressive alien threat. The game mixes stealth, combat, puzzle-solving and vehicle sequences without becoming trapped in a single genre. Its characters are memorable, the world has a colourful personality and the story manages to balance serious ideas with plenty of humour. Photography is particularly important, giving Jade a reason to investigate the creatures and places around her rather than simply charging through every obstacle. It is one of those games that feels more imaginative than its commercial success might suggest. Beneath the bright colours and occasional jokes is a surprisingly thoughtful adventure about truth, propaganda and deciding who deserves to be trusted.
