If you’ve ever looked at a cave and thought, “Yes, this is where I’ll build my empire,” then Cave Wars is your jam. Released in 1996, this strategy game throws you into a subterranean slugfest of factional warfare, where rocks, tunnels, and poorly-lit ambushes are your bread and butter. It’s like Civilization, but claustrophobic. The AI can be brutal, the graphics are, well, earthy, and the interface takes some spelunking to master. But if you stick with it, there’s depth—both strategic and literal.

Turn based Strategy. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Start with Ibido map. It is the same map every time, so you learn the choke points vs active enemies. There are also neutrals cities. Take when your technology is superior and you have the armies. 8 races, but I only 5 are really playable. Start with the Advari. Great hit points but the slowest. You won't play them after you have played other races. Namaire are elves. They move far, low HPs, but great with ranged weapons. My favorite. Gakkar are great fighters, but not good against range weapons. Take as many neutral cities as you can early. Trolls have great HPs. Take cities early. Also, fights take less movement points, so can have more engagements. Take cities early. Humans are average at everything. Boring. Tarchons are rat men. Grow way fast. Are sometimes invisible w/ no armor. Create special wizards which grow more powerful with magic research. Summoning or Cave (grow food). I normally research, weapons (Bows & Armor) /Cave Tech (Iron) / Transport (+ Defense, + Range or + Melee)/ Then go back to Weapons or Select a Magic to improve Wizards.
