Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye

Celtic Tales (1995) throws you into the misty, myth-soaked hills of ancient Ireland, where diplomacy is just war with more steps. You’re a clan leader trying to outwit druids, conquer rival territories, and avoid being hexed into a sheep. It’s deep, dense, and demands attention—this isn’t a coffee-break kind of game. The UI is a little fiddly, and tutorials are for the weak, but once it clicks, it’s like running a supernatural board meeting in medieval times.

Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye reviews

PC Gamer (1995): "Over the years, Koei has put out some truly impressive warfare simulations set in different period throughout history. Their newest title, Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye follows the company's traditions of exhaustive historical research, total control over gameplay, and deep economic and wargaming aspects."

Computer Gaming World (1995): "In short, CELTIC TALES is a better-than-average game, enjoyable, stimulating, and unique. The magic system is one of the best I've seen. The game will appeal strongly to both fans of Celtic mythology and to strategy gamers who can appreciate its fantasy and historical elements. Unfortunately, the gameplay is unbalanced, and it's possible to ignore much of the complexity of the empire-building phase by opting for all-out war. CELTIC TALES, which could have been a truly outstanding strategy game, is merely a good one for this reason. But if you have a special place in your heart for the Emerald Isle, as I do, you shouldn't pass up a chance to visit."
