CheckIt 3

CheckIt 3 is a DOS diagnostic utility designed to inspect the health and configuration of a personal computer. In an era when Windows could not necessarily tell you much about what was happening underneath the hood, programs like CheckIt were extremely useful. They could test hardware, examine system components, and help identify problems that might otherwise require a great deal of guesswork. The program reflects a time when owning a PC also meant occasionally behaving like its mechanic. If the machine refused to cooperate, you might have to investigate memory, disks, ports, video hardware, or other components before blaming the software. CheckIt 3 provided a structured way to perform those checks. Its interface is practical rather than glamorous, which is exactly what diagnostic software should be. Today it makes an entertaining historical curiosity, but for DOS users it could be the difference between calmly locating a fault and repeatedly rebooting while hoping for divine intervention.
