Civilization 3

Civilization 3 expands the famous empire-building formula with a richer diplomatic system, improved graphics, expanded technology trees, and a more developed strategic model. Starting with a tiny settlement, players guide their civilization through centuries of exploration, warfare, science, trade, and cultural development. Every decision can have consequences much later, which is why a harmless-looking patch of land suddenly becomes the most strategically important place on Earth several hours into a game. Diplomacy allows alliances and rivalries to develop, while technology determines how quickly an empire can advance. Cities, resources, military units, and infrastructure all need attention, creating the familiar Civilization temptation to play just one more turn. Of course, that turn is rarely the last. It is one of the series' most approachable entries while still offering enormous room for experimentation.

Retro gamer collector's corner:

Two expansion sets have been published for Sid Meier's Civilization III: Play the World in October 2002, and Conquests in November 2003. The stand-alone version is Civilization III: Complete Edition, which includes the two expansions and several patches. (This version came after Civilization III: Gold Edition and Civilization III: Game of the Year Edition.)

In 2002, Eagle Games published the Sid Meier's Civilization board game, created by Glenn Dover. The game was based on Civilization III and mirrored many of the video game's concepts and gameplay components.
