Abandonware DOS title

Days of Thunder

Days of Thunder (1990) is what happens when Hollywood’s love affair with Tom Cruise collides with DOS racing. Based on the movie of the same name, it’s an attempt to capture the adrenaline of NASCAR on a PC that barely knew what 3D was. The result? Surprisingly fun, if you squint hard enough. You’ll race, pit, repair, and hope your car doesn’t explode halfway through a lap. The graphics are blocky, the physics questionable, but the sense of speed is there. It’s cheesy, loud, and kind of thrilling—exactly like the film it’s based on.

Retro gamer collector's corner:

Prior to the version developed by Beam Software, a version of the game was in development at Mindscape by Chris Oberth. At some point, Oberth's version was cancelled and the work transferred to Beam Software. Oberth's version was recovered from floppy discs in 2020 after his death by the Video Game History Foundation and its source code was made available in June with permission of Oberth's estate.
