Dr. Sbaitso

Dr. Sbaitso is one of the more memorable curiosities from the early era of computer speech software. Developed by Creative Labs, it presented itself as a virtual doctor capable of responding to typed messages using synthesized speech. The idea was simple, slightly silly, and extremely effective at making people gather around the computer just to hear what it would say. Its speech synthesis was hardly indistinguishable from a human voice, but that was part of the charm. The robotic delivery made even ordinary sentences sound faintly ominous. Dr. Sbaitso is less a serious productivity application than a demonstration of what PC sound hardware could do, and it became a small piece of computing folklore as a result. Today the technology seems primitive, especially compared with modern voice assistants, but that comparison misses the point. In its time, making the computer talk back was enough to feel like having a tiny electronic personality living inside the machine.
