Elf Girl Sim Date RPG is exactly the sort of wonderfully specific title that could only have come from the golden age of quirky browser-style PC games. Released in 2005, it combines dating-simulation elements with RPG mechanics and a fantasy setting populated by, naturally, elf girls. The basic idea is to interact with characters, build relationships and deal with the various challenges presented by the game world, rather than simply charging into battle every five minutes. Its presentation belongs firmly to the mid-2000s, when small independent games could be eccentric, experimental and unapologetically niche. If traditional RPGs are too serious and dating sims are too normal, this game cheerfully occupies the strange territory in between.
