With Gnome Ranger 2: Ingrid’s Back, things get a bit more polished, though not necessarily more sane. The puzzles return, along with the dreamlike environments and that peculiar sense that the game is quietly laughing at you. Ingrid’s return adds a narrative hook, but don’t expect anything resembling a straightforward story; this is still very much a puzzle-first experience. The visuals are slightly improved, and the challenges feel a bit more structured, but the game retains its predecessor’s knack for making you feel both clever and utterly confused in equal measure. It’s a sequel that doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but at least it sands down some of the sharper edges.
