Grand Monster Slam takes tennis, removes anything resembling normal human athletes, and replaces them with creatures that look like they escaped a fever dream. In Grand Monster Slam, you play matches that feel like a cross between sports simulation and chaotic fantasy brawling, where the ball is almost secondary to the sheer weirdness on screen. Timing still matters, but so does figuring out what on earth your opponent even is. It is clunky in that charming late-80s way, yet surprisingly addictive once you embrace the madness. If you ever wanted to see a monster take tennis way too seriously, this is your moment.
The One (1989): "Also due out at the same time and price as the other 16-bit versions, this version suffers most in the translation. A great deal of the game's all-important atmosphere is generated by its spot-on spot effects, none of which made it to the IBM- compatibles. The graphics too are a let-down - blocky and suffering from the limited palette available."
