Released in 1994 for DOS, Iron Cross is a historical strategy game that tries very hard to make military planning look sexy. Spoiler: it doesn’t. You’re dealing with World War II battles, but instead of adrenaline-pumping action, you get maps, counters, and the kind of statistics that would make a math teacher blush. Still, there’s a quiet satisfaction in plotting your moves, anticipating enemy blunders, and watching the war unfold like a very violent game of chess. It’s not the most polished strategy game, but if you enjoy a slower pace and don’t mind a UI that sometimes feels like it’s working against you, this one has a certain old-school charm.
