Ishido (1990, DOS/Mac) is the digital version of sitting in a Zen garden and realizing you’re terrible at strategy. The game’s premise is simple: place stones on a grid according to color and symbol, trying to match them in clever ways. Simple, yes—but fiendishly tricky in execution. The visuals are minimalist but elegant, and the whole experience is wrapped in a pseudo-mystical atmosphere that makes you feel like you should be sipping tea while playing. It’s calm, meditative, and occasionally infuriating when the board refuses to cooperate. Think solitaire, but with a spiritual makeover—and a lot less forgiving.
