Isle of the Dead

Isle of the Dead is a first-person horror shooter that combines exploration, combat, and a wonderfully grim island setting. You find yourself surrounded by hostile creatures and mysterious locations, with survival depending on careful movement, weapon use, and keeping an eye on whatever might be lurking around the next corner. The game has a distinctly early-1990s approach to horror, relying on atmosphere, threatening environments, and the simple fear of not knowing what is waiting ahead. Its technology is obviously limited compared with later 3D games, but that limitation can give the experience an oddly claustrophobic quality. Isle of the Dead is rough around the edges and certainly not a polished blockbuster, yet it has the charm of an ambitious computer game trying to create a horror adventure with limited resources. If nothing else, it proves that remote tropical islands are usually much more dangerous than travel brochures suggest.
