Before the term “VR” existed, Knightmare (1986, DOS) gave you a taste of immersive peril. Inspired by the UK TV show, you guide a blindfolded knight through deadly dungeons with your wits (and limited keyboard reflexes) as your only allies. One wrong move and it’s “Game Over, brave adventurer.” The gameplay may feel archaic now, but there’s something oddly hypnotic about the eerie atmosphere and constant sense of doom. It’s like a clumsy Dark Souls ancestor who still manages to spook you.
