Abandonware DOS title

Lands of Lore 2: Guardians of Destiny

By 1997, Lands of Lore 2: Guardians of Destiny was already pushing the limits of DOS RPGs. It abandons the grid-based movement of its predecessor in favor of full 3D exploration, which was ambitious and occasionally awkward. The story is darker, more personal, and surprisingly introspective for a fantasy RPG of its time. Character customization is deeper, magic more flexible, and the world richer in lore. It’s not without flaws—the interface can be clumsy—but the sense of scale and freedom is impressive. This is a game that rewards exploration and experimentation, even when it stumbles technically. Ambitious, moody, and memorable, it feels like a bridge between old and new RPG design philosophies.
