Legend of Faerghail

Back in 1990, Legend of Faerghail was what you played if you wanted a role-playing experience both grand and slightly unforgiving. A German-developed RPG, it combined dungeon crawling, turn-based combat, and an atmosphere thick enough to make you wonder if the developers wanted you to succeed at all. The interface sometimes feels like it was designed by a medieval torturer, but perseverance is rewarded with a deep, intricate adventure. The monsters are brutal, the maps can be confusing, and you’ll swear the random encounters are out to ruin your day. And yet, once it clicks, the game becomes oddly addictive—like a puzzle that mocks you until you finally beat it.

Legend of Faerghail review

Enchanted Realms (1991): "Overall, the Legend of Faerghail is an enjoyable game that is very reminiscent to the Bards Tale series. If you enjoyed the Bard, you will also want to add this game to your collection. Faerghail has much to offer and will keep you busy with a whole countryside to travel, towns to visit and massive dungeons to explore."

The DOS release is severely bugged and flawed to the point that this game becomes unplayable. You are advised to pick the Amiga or Atari ST versions instead.
