Might and Magic 4: Clouds of Xeen

With Might and Magic 4: Clouds of Xeen, the series heads to the colorful world of Xeen, where the sky is bright, the monsters are plentiful, and the sense of adventure is delightfully old-school. This chapter introduces a more vibrant look and a slightly friendlier interface, though “friendly” is relative when dragons still roast careless adventurers like marshmallows. The game is packed with castles, puzzles, hidden passages, and enough magical oddities to keep even veteran RPG explorers entertained. What makes it particularly memorable is the feeling that the world is part of something bigger—because it literally is, once you realize it connects with its sequel. Even on its own, though, it’s a cheerful yet dangerous journey that captures the joy of wandering through a fantasy land that doesn’t bother explaining itself.

Might and Magic 4: Clouds of Xeen review

Computer Gaming World (1993): "Overall, Clouds of Xeen has many improvements over the previous game, in particular the addition of the auto-notes, reducing the number of “super items”, the separate inventory fur quest items, and the choice of two modes of play, as well as others mentioned above. Game play moves along more smoothly, and with less frustration (and fewer lost notes) than in prior entries in the series. What still needs work, however, is integrating more quests into the plot and having an actual story that develops as the game progresses. (...) The world is rather empty of everyday people, and this in turn makes it hard to have anything beyond a barebones story. A more populated world, with a more solid foundation, would go a long way to beefing up the enjoyment of the game."

Retro gamer collector's corner:

The game was available initially on floppy disc but was also released on CD. Might and Magic IV and V were some of the very first Western games to come out on CD.
