What if a nuclear war had already destroyed civilisation, but the catastrophe was actually a vision of the future that could still be prevented? That is the unsettling premise of Mindfighter, an interactive fiction adventure published by Activision in 1988. You play Robin, an eleven-year-old boy with psychic abilities who wakes up in the ruins of Southampton, surrounded by a grim vision of a devastated Britain. His task is to discover what caused this terrible future and find a way to return to reality before it becomes inevitable. Written by Anna Popkess and Fergus McNeill, the game combines text-based exploration with simple graphics and a rather bleak atmosphere. Not exactly bedtime reading, then.
