If you thought childhood was all about sunshine and puppies, Monster Bash begs to differ. This 1993 side-scroller throws you into the shoes of Johnny Dash, a slingshot-toting kid who rescues kidnapped pets from all sorts of creepy nasties. Think of it as the pet-friendly version of Doom, minus the chainsaw but with just as much pixelated carnage. The mix of dark humor and surprisingly tricky platforming makes the game stand out in the Apogee library. You’ll curse every spike trap while still grinning at the absurdity of it all. Saving kittens never felt so sinister.
