Onslaught (1990, DOS) takes the classic top-down shoot-and-survive formula and injects it with an enthusiasm that borders on reckless. Hordes of enemies sprint at you like they’ve all had too much coffee, and your job is to make sure they regret that. The action is constant, the explosions plentiful, and the pacing relentless enough to make your keyboard sweat. It’s not sophisticated, but it doesn’t need to be—this is the digital equivalent of comfort food. Turn it on, clear your mind, and blast your way through screens of chaos. Sometimes catharsis comes in pixelated form.
Zero Magazine Issue 3 (1990) - "Although initially Onslaught's appeal seems to lie in its adventure game setting and the pseudo-strategy bit with the map, it's really a shoot 'em up through and through. And a darned good one too. Hewson has once again come up with a cunning interfusion of violence, variety and graphical fabness which, while it hardly breaks any moulds, certainly looks different. Above all Onslaught is a fun game to play and should certainly fend off Old Father Time admirably."
