Overdrive is a fast-paced driving game built around the pleasures of speed, aggressive maneuvering, and trying not to turn your vehicle into an expensive collection of pixels. The action is firmly arcade-oriented, so realistic driving technique is less important than learning the courses and reacting quickly to hazards. The tracks provide a mixture of bends, obstacles, and opportunities to push the accelerator harder than good judgment recommends. As with many DOS racing games of its period, the graphics are simple but functional, leaving the player to concentrate on the road ahead. There is a satisfying immediacy to the design: choose your vehicle, start racing, and worry about the consequences later. It is not a serious simulation, nor does it pretend to be. Instead, Overdrive offers a compact dose of racing fun with the sort of uncomplicated attitude that made arcade games so addictive.
