QBasic 1.1

QBasic 1.1 is Microsoft's approachable programming environment for DOS and one of the easiest ways an entire generation learned that computers could be told exactly what to do. It combines a BASIC interpreter with a simple editor, allowing users to write programs and run them without the lengthy compile-and-link process associated with many other languages. The environment encourages experimentation: type a few lines, press a key, and suddenly the machine is doing something you created. That immediacy made QBasic particularly attractive to beginners, while still providing enough features for surprisingly ambitious little projects. It was also famously distributed with later versions of DOS, meaning that countless users discovered programming almost by accident. The interface looks primitive today, but there is something wonderfully liberating about it. No frameworks, package managers, or dependency errors stand between you and your first program. Just code, a blinking cursor, and the inevitable urge to make something beep.
