Red Baron

Red Baron is a 1990 flight simulation that recreates the aerial combat of World War I, putting players behind the controls of early fighter aircraft. The game combines dogfighting, campaign progression, historical detail, and aircraft management into a surprisingly rich experience. Players must learn to handle fragile biplanes while engaging enemy pilots in tense aerial battles. The aircraft feel very different from modern fighters, making positioning and careful flying essential. Red Baron stands out for giving players a sense of what early air combat might have been like, when pilots relied on skill and courage rather than advanced missiles and computerized systems. It is also a useful reminder that calling something a fighter plane does not guarantee it will survive being flown directly into a tree.
