Renegade

Renegade is a 1988 DOS beat 'em up that puts players in the role of a tough street fighter battling gangs through urban environments. The basic formula is wonderfully direct: walk into trouble, punch trouble repeatedly, and continue walking until there is no trouble left. Players can use punches, kicks, throws, and other attacks to deal with groups of enemies, making positioning and timing important. The game belongs to the early generation of beat 'em ups that helped establish many conventions later refined by arcade classics. Renegade can be challenging, particularly when several opponents surround the player at once, but that difficulty is part of its old-school charm. It is a game from an era when conflict resolution was remarkably simple. If someone looked suspicious, the correct response was apparently to start kicking.
