Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Return to Castle Wolfenstein revives the classic Wolfenstein name with a modern first-person shooter built around secret laboratories, Nazi experiments, supernatural forces, and an unfortunate shortage of quiet weekends for B.J. Blazkowicz. The campaign mixes conventional firefights with stealthier sections, strange technology, and genuinely creepy encounters, giving the action more variety than a simple corridor shooter. Weapons feel powerful and enemies provide enough resistance to keep the player moving rather than casually strolling through the levels. The atmosphere is particularly effective, shifting between military installations and unsettling occult locations. Multiplayer also became an important part of the game's reputation, offering team-based combat that extended its lifespan considerably. It is fast, atmospheric, and packed with the sort of ridiculous historical fiction that only videogames can deliver with a straight face. For fans of classic shooters, it successfully modernized the Wolfenstein formula without forgetting its roots.

Retro gamer collector's corner:

A multiplayer-only spinoff of the series, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, was originally planned as a full-fledged expansion pack for Return to Castle Wolfenstein developed by Splash Damage. The single-player component of the game was never completed and thus was removed entirely. The developers at that point decided the multiplayer part would be released as a free, downloadable standalone game. Enemy Territory is a team-based networked multiplayer game which involves completing objectives through teamwork using various character classes.
