Rocket Ranger is a 1988 DOS action-strategy game from Cinemaware that mixes science fiction, arcade sequences, and an alternate-history version of World War II. Players take on the role of a heroic rocket-equipped soldier attempting to stop an alien-backed enemy invasion. The game combines strategic decisions with action scenes, requiring players to manage the larger campaign while personally taking part in dangerous missions. Its cinematic presentation was impressive for its time, helping create the feeling of participating in a pulp science-fiction serial. Rocket Ranger has plenty of charm, combining wartime drama with rockets, aliens, and heroic speeches. It is exactly the kind of alternate history where nobody stops to ask whether strapping a rocket to a human being is sensible. Fortunately, sensible was clearly not the objective.
"Another excellent job of conversion makes this very attractive on the PC. The graphics have come over well, although some sequences have been changed. Notably there is no conversation on the Zeppelin." - ACE Magazine
